Talent Management and Talent Gap

Talent Gap

              (Jordan, 2021)

A talent gap is just an organization's shortage of skilled workers. Every company periodically has to deal with the difficult problem of a skill gap. The HR Department works extremely hard to close this gap using a variety of strategies, the majority of which are covered in later chapters of this guide.

An organization's ability to expand and flourish is likely to be hampered by a persistent talent gap. It also has a detrimental influence on employees' motivation since they feel demotivated because there aren't enough competent individuals for them to look up to for the guidance and instructions they need to operate efficiently.

An organization that suffers from a talent gap performs very poorly overall. At this point, HR managers fill the void by hiring skilled individuals to join the company.

How to recognize skill Gaps in the workplace?

Although it may seem apparent, the first step in detecting skills shortages is determining which skills are most crucial to your organization: both the "hard" operational abilities needed to complete the work and the "soft" less obvious but equally vital skills like critical thinking and a positive attitude.

In larger firms, it is difficult to identify skills shortfalls without excellent People data. You may address skills shortages by analyzing your people data, using performance indicators, a skills or competency matrix, employee surveys and tests, a two-way performance review process, and data from your HR system and LMS. Ideally, data collection and reporting on skills gaps will be significantly easier with integrated People technology.

But closing the gap in soft skills might be a different story. How do you tell if workers who have been with your company for a while are still improving their critical thinking, problem-solving, or communication skills? When addressing skills gaps, the previously "soft" but increasingly "essential skills" are considerably more difficult to quantify. This is where a skills gap analysis could be especially helpful in developing an employee upskilling and reskilling strategy.

How to close the talent Gaps in your organization?

The apparent solution to address current operational skills gaps is to make sure that employees have easy access to chances for training and development, and more significantly, that these opportunities are given in a manner that best suits their needs. Whether via in-person interactions, online courses, mobile learning, career development resources, coaching, mentorship, or a combination of these methods.

Nevertheless, closing the skills gap is probably a bigger problem for larger companies than simply checking a box on a learning management system and expecting staff to take care of themselves. It won't probably make a significant difference in the long run to close the skills gap, but it might be useful in identifying a compliance knowledge or competency gap.

What are the advantages of a talent gap analysis?

Companies may make sure their personnel are aware, skilled, and prepared to carry out the tasks allocated to them by doing a talent gap study. After a talent gap study identifies knowledge gaps, HR teams can assist staff members in developing the necessary skills to close those gaps. As a result, a talent gap analysis can assist in directing staff members towards certain forms of reskilling, upskilling, and cross-skilling that will be especially advantageous for their position and company.

It can also streamline the recruitment process by giving talent acquisition teams clarity about which skills and competencies they should prioritize when evaluating external candidates. Talent gap analysis is one of the most accurate and effective ways to identify knowledge that’s missing within the organization.

  1. I agree with the author's emphasis on upskilling and reskilling as key strategies to address the talent gap (Boudreau & Thomas, 2005). Recent research by Cappelli (2016) further highlights the importance of continuous learning programs in attracting and retaining top talent. However, I believe organizations should also focus on fostering internal talent mobility to bridge skill gaps and promote employee development (Arthur et al., 2003)

  2. In order to reskill, you must find individuals with "adjacent skills," or abilities that are similar to the new abilities your business needs. It offers a lateral learning opportunity that can assist in meeting the high demand for reskilling among workers in the contemporary workforce. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, technology advancements will necessitate reskilling for 50% of all employment.(TalentGuard, 2019)
